I. APRIL’S MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

Development & Membership ran April’s Membership Drive, which ended with just over US$269,000 raised from over 8,000 donors. Communications helped distribute news posts, while Translation made Drive information available in 24 languages.

In anticipation of the April drive, Finance posted the 2025 budget.

II. ARCHIVE OF OUR OWN

Although AO3 has not experienced a data breach, malware and reused passwords can still put accounts at risk. On World Password Day, Policy & Abuse published a reminder about how to keep your AO3 account secure and other internet security best practices.

In April, Open Doors announced the import of Garlic Press and Poison Pen Press, a collection of fanzines for Star Trek: The Original Series. This is the first of their Fanzine Scan Hosting Project (FSHP) publisher imports.

Also in April, Accessibility, Design & Technology deployed a number of bug fixes and improvements to AO3, including performance improvements to the invitation queue and fixing the bug that made animated gifs not animate when uploaded as pseud icons. They also published release notes covering changes made in March.

In March, Policy & Abuse received 2,988 tickets, while Support received 2,909 – less than Support received in the previous two months, but still above their usual average.

Tag Wrangling announced some new “No Fandom” additional tags, or tags not specific to particular fandoms. This update included tags related to Pregnancy and Reader-Insert. In March, the committee wrangled over 460,000 tags, or approximately 1,150 tags per wrangling volunteer!

III. ELSEWHERE AT THE OTW

Fanlore is running a themed month for May, focusing on monsters and creatures in fandom. Keep an eye on their Bluesky, Tumblr, or Twitter/X for featured articles, and join their Discord server for a themed editing chat in May!

In April, Legal continued responding to user queries, tracking legislation, and preparing to respond to events as they unfold.

Transformative Works and Cultures (TWC) has announced their second annual Fans of Color Research Prize! The award recognizes the best peer-reviewed article about fans and/or fandoms of color published in TWC in the preceding three years (for 2025, no earlier than 2022) and furthers the journal’s goal to support scholars whose work fills critical gaps in fan studies literature about racially marginalized and/or non-Western fans. The winner will receive a US$500 cash prize. Submissions are due to [email protected] no later than May 15, 2025 (Anywhere on Earth).

IV. GOVERNANCE

Board ran their second public meeting on April 26 in the Board Discord server. Their agenda was announced beforehand, and meeting minutes will be available on the OTW website soon.

The Board Assistants Team continued work on ongoing projects, including revamping the Board Discord and investigating non-profit training. In conjunction with Board and the OTW Organizational Culture Roadmap team, they also devoted a lot of focus to working on the OTW Crisis Procedures and making related edits to the Procurement Policy draft.

V. OUR VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers & Recruiting conducted recruitment for four committees in March: Policy & Abuse, Strategic Planning, Translation, and TWC.

From March 19 to April 20, Volunteers & Recruiting received 200 new requests, and completed 208, leaving them with 45 open requests (including induction and removal tasks listed below). As of April 20, 2025, the OTW has 918 volunteers. \o/

Still missing Monkey King, I looked up a recipe online for spicy Korean chicken wings because I don't have a Korean cookbook. I went to three different grocery stores looking for gochujang and couldn't find any and got too tired and burned out to keep looking.

Fannish 50 2025 #1: Flash Prompt Box

Inspired by [personal profile] linky and [personal profile] luckyzukky , who are both doing the same 'til June 6, I decided to host a [community profile] ficortreat style prompt box. If you ask for one of the following in a comment, I will fill it for you!! This will be open until June 10th. This is my first fannish 50 post, too, because I NEED to actually complete that this year :')
I may not get to everyone, because I have life stuff, but I'll try! :)

  • A fic of at least 100 words. These will probably be short! I'd prefer not to write any Ed Mercer ships, not my thing, but other than that I'd love to write something for you (including OW). Any fandoms listed here are chill, and any kind of prompt is chill.
  • A one card tarot pull OR a two card lenormand pull with a short interpretation. I've been reading for a few years and want to practice on others. I don't feel comfortable doing health related questions, including pregnancy, but other than that feel free to ask!
  • I will make 1-2 icons for each request! If you could point out some screencap sites, that'd be especially appreciated. Please visual media only or non-fandom/stock!
  • I will send you some music recs if you'd like! I listen to a lot of music. Just give me some idea of what you like and I'll see what I can do.

cyare: Note to self... You have too many notes (Text: Note)

What are you currently reading?

Last week I mentioned I wanted to read something fun and romantic. Well, I did it! I started A. J. Sherwood's "Villainy" series and it's been great. It's a collection of short stories, divided in two parts: "How I Stole the Princess's White Knight and Turned Him to Villainy" and "How I Took the King on a Bone-a-Fide Quest of Piracy, Piemu, and Profit".

It's a quick and easy read, fun and light-hearted and the romance is a cute slow burn. One of the characters is implied to be demisexual, he pretty clearly states that he experiences attraction after an emotional connection is formed.

I'm about 2/3 through it, but I also kind of don't want the story to finish. I'm just enjoying the shenanigans of these dorks too much! <3

Also, I'm keeping up with the Aurora Australis readalong! This week (today!) is all about Trials of a Messman by Messman [anon].
What have you recently finished reading?

I finished another book with great comedic elements and a super long title: "Love for the Cold-Blooded Or: The Part-Time Evil Minion’s Guide to Accidentally Dating a Superhero" by Alex Gabriel.

Spoilers for the first chapter, I guess )

I also squeezed in "Nicked" by M. T. Anderson, which I've wanted to read since someone recced it to me -- I'm sorry, I don't remember who you are!

And another cut )

It's been fun reading so much, but there are no more long weekends in sight until June 2nd (Festa della Repubblica!), so my reading speed will slow down. Still, it's been good to spend more time immersed in books :3
What will you be reading next?

Hmm, either something spicy or some mystery, I haven't decided yet. Did I mention that I have 3 lists called "Read this first" and "No, really read these ones first" and "READ FIRST!!!"? ^^'

Mereth Aderthad 2025 Interview with Savannah Horrell by Anrea. "By Guile Committed: Comparing Tolkien's Thieves to Beowulf"

The Hobbit is essentially the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf told from the perspective of the thief: Bilbo Baggins. Although embroidered significantly beyond the poem that gave it its inspiration, that key plot element remains, along with other important connections to the Germanic literature that Tolkien loved. For the latest in our series of interviews of presenters for Mereth Aderthad 2025, Anérea spoke with Savannah Horrell about her upcoming presentation "By Guile Committed: Comparing Tolkien’s Thieves to Beowulf." Savannah notes important connections between Tolkien and Beowulf but observes that the two authors depict thieves quite differently, leading to works with very different tones and themes.

You can read Anérea's interview with Savannah here.

Had a great time with L. yesterday. Arranged travel plans to visit my family in Texas but I couldn't get a later flight so I have to take an uber to the airport at 4:30 IN THE MORNING. Ugh.
I made shrimp and avocado pasta salad for lunch, it was yums.

Writing Snippet

winterfirelight: Joseph Wilson from the 1980s New Teen Titans playing the guitar (Joey)
[personal profile] winterfirelight
I had a dream last night that I spent some time this evening writing into a little 1,200 word vignette. I'm not sure if it's finished yet, as there's no real resolution, but also it feels like the kind of thing that might resolve without any real answers anyway. As dreams do, I suppose. I'll probably hang onto it for awhile before posting it anywhere in case I add on more to what I've got, but here's a small snippet:

Dick blinked, turning to look back at their usual route disappearing behind them, quickly overrun by the blurring lights of the neighborhood strip malls and dark pockets of residential alleys.

“You missed the turn,” he said.

Joey’s head turned barely towards him, then focused back on the road. His hands tightened on the wheel. He made no indication of correcting their course.

Dick went quiet.

There wasn’t much out in this direction. The city was already a memory out here, where the county funding didn’t reach and the homes slowly wasted away into dilapidated echoes of a world that had forgotten them decades ago. More storefronts stood empty than not. Paint flaked off of walls.

The traffic lights blinked. The streetlights didn’t.

He didn’t ask where they were going.

So that's a bit of my sleeping brain made real, I suppose. No idea where the dream came from, but here we are.

Assuming we're still in Three Weeks when I decide this is finished, I'll probably make it a Dreamwidth Exclusive.

Not much else to report today. It was a Monday. I worked. Got some things out of the dehydrator. The cat was extra insistent about being on my lap and in the way, but when is he not? I love the goober.

I was checking out [community profile] 1word1day's Sunday Word: Fumarole when the first example caught my eye.

On Wednesday afternoon, Popocatépetl emitted a huge fumarole that split in the middle, eventually taking the shape of a giant heart as it rose into the sky. (Flights suspended in Puebla as Popocatépetl volcano grumbles, The Washington Post, Mexico News Daily 2024)

I opened the article and sure enough, it does look like a heart <3 So I made an icon :)

Plants and Ponderings

[personal profile] winterfirelight

I'm writing a post in lieu of working on writing, since I told myself I'd take a break on that today. My brain only has so much juice these days, and I'd like to avoid turning into jello before bedtime. I did get some good plotting done, so I know the shape and timeline of the next five chapters more concretely. Beyond that I'll have to do more plotting, but by then I'll be in a section that I'm hoping will be more character driven and should largely write itself.

We made it to the plant swap today, and picked up parsley and chives for the culinary herb garden! I was also able to snag some violets for the medicinal garden. The biggest score, or at least the most interesting, is probably the log inoculated with shiitake spores. The person who brought it says it should start producing in two years (!!!), so for now I'll have to find a nice, dark place to store it, and then do my best not to forget that it's there. A long time, but then it's supposed to produce for 5-10 years, which seems worth the wait.

I also picked up an actual book for the first time in awhile! Haven't had the focus lately. Still don't, if I'm honest, but that's a skill that will probably only come back with practice, and I made it through a good couple of chapters. A dark read - Timothy Snyder always is these days - but an interesting one. A good reminder of the days when I learned about this stuff more intentionally, before life took me in a different direction. I wonder often whether I'll one day pivot back that way, as there's a lot that I miss about being able to travel and meet different kinds of people and challenge my own thinking more deliberately. Life for the past couple of years has been a lot more siloed, for lots of reasons, only some of which are in my control.

That's not always a bad thing, though. I'm appreciating the small things as they come. The garden coming to life. The comings and goings of neighborhood cats on the porch. Slowly cleaning up the house from the years of hoarding and disarray from a previous tenant, and making the space what we want. There's a lot to like about this life, all things considered.

Five Things corr Said

Posted by Sveritas

Every month or so the OTW will be doing a Q&A with one of its volunteers about their experiences in the organization. The posts express each volunteer’s personal views and do not necessarily reflect the views of the OTW or constitute OTW policy. Today’s post is with corr, who volunteers in the Volunteers and Recruiting Committee.

How does what you do as a volunteer fit into what the OTW does?

As a Volunteers & Recruiting (VolCom) volunteer, I help keep the OTW running from an organisational point of view. We run recruitment, offering many recruitment rounds each year so every committee has enough volunteers for their work, while managing onboarding, departures, and tool access for all volunteers. Behind those tasks is a lot of documentation that we need to keep up to date, so document reviews are a huge part of what we do. We also have various projects: one example is that we do something to show our appreciation to all our volunteers on International Volunteer Day in December each year. Other examples are the development of a Volunteer Handbook for new volunteers, the development of a Chair Training Plan, or the implementation of new tools to help the organisation run smoothly.

What is a typical week like for you as a volunteer?
It depends. I mainly focus on cases, document reviews, and projects. Some weeks, I’ll be up to my knees in document reviews or planning/implementing a project, other weeks I’ll mostly work on cases. Cases can be about so many different things—assistance with tools, role onboardings or departures, name changes, updating our volunteer database to account for changes in a volunteer’s record, and all other questions our volunteers or interested not-yet-volunteers might have that are about the volunteering experience in general and not specific to one of the other committees.

When we have new Volcom volunteers, I help show them how everything works—I love training people, so that’s a lot of fun for me. We also have regular working parties within our committee and all try to attend at least one each week, and I look at our committee chats at least two to three times a day and keep an eye on all the incoming requests.

What made you decide to volunteer?
I’ve been a user of the Archive for about a decade. I’m not a native English speaker and was mostly active in my native language’s fandom corner in the 00s and early 10s, so I only learned about the Archive’s existence after becoming fluent enough to enjoy writing and reading in English. Since then, I’ve been an avid fan: I firmly believe in the mission behind protecting all transformative works, and fanfic has kept me company through many stages of my life.

I also wanted to get more in contact with fandom-loving people who share my opinion about maximum inclusiveness of content, and I am a very curious person who likes to peek behind the scenes and understand how things work, so it was honestly just a matter of time until I applied. The last part is, apart from our committee’s work involving many to-do lists and my passionate love for to-do lists, also the reason why I love volunteering for Volcom specifically: we interact with every part of the OTW, so I get to see and learn a lot about the organisation and how it works.

What has been your biggest challenge doing work for the OTW?
Last summer, I tabled at a convention for the OTW. It was incredibly fun, and the mix of people who got excited about meeting “the AO3 people” and people who I got to explain our mission to was amazing. On a few noteworthy occasions, I even got to explain to people what fanfiction is, and I know of at least two people who googled it and got excited about reading more stories for books they enjoyed! It was a very big challenge for me, because I’m not a particularly talkative person, but I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Getting to talk about the OTW and especially being able to tell people about all of our other projects aside from the Archive was so much fun and incredibly rewarding.

What fannish things do you like to do?
I’m a writer and a reader. My main fandom is All For The Game, but if a hook is compelling, I’m willing to read almost any fandom. I love dark stuff – I’m one of those people who actively search for the Major Character Death warning and who find Dead Doves very intriguing! I’m active on a few fandom-related Discord servers, and I often sign up for exchanges or challenges (I keep telling myself that this time, there will be a prompt that matches a story that already lives in my head, and then completely unexpectedly get too excited about an entirely unrelated prompt. I have hundreds of half-written stories, snippets, or prompts that all wait to see the light of day).

Also, I have developed a special interest in the Omegaverse. I can talk for hours about why I think it’s an incredibly interesting genre to write in and why there is sooo much interesting worldbuilding cooked into the premise. This has gotten to the point where people listened to me hold a presentation about it for over an hour, and I have become the resident Omegaverse expert in at least one Discord server and two friend groups. Recently, I was tagged with “i need your omegaverse PowerPoint, it’s an emergency” and I am pretty proud of that. Let it be known that I am always ready to help with an Omegaverse emergency!

Now that our volunteer’s said five things about what they do, it’s your turn to ask one more thing! Feel free to ask about their work in the comments. Or if you’d like, you can check out earlier Five Things posts.

I want to start doing book reviews on here. This idea was inspired by me digging my old copy of my favorite book of all time--Little Weirds---out of my closet and rereading it again, during a time in my life where I'm very lovesick and yearning and aching and feeling every single word that Slate writes here etched in. I first read Little Weirds when I was 21, after watching Slate in the first Venom movie and loving her character. At that time I was going through a breakup with a friend, and I was in unrequited love with God-knows-what (I am always in unrequited love with God-knows-what and whatchamacallit), someone I can't even remember now. Slate's words have always, unfortunately, resonated.

I'd like to live a life where Slate's words in Little Weirds don't resonate with me quite so deeply, LOL.

Anyway, Slate's writing style is not for everyone. It's fast and fluttering and chunky and goes on odd tangents, and its eccentricities are what makes it so relatable to me; my life feels as lopsided and disjointed as her words are at times, and my heart seems to flicker from love to love just like her sentences. This sounds mean, but I write this with the greatest of intentions--Slate's writing "flaws" make me feel seen.

Slate writes: “PS: Speaking of “sweeping things under the rug,” I don’t think you’d hear even a peep of objection if we were to have a repeat of Rug turns into carpet of flowers that are alive and you can wear the whole thing as a shawl and new blooms keep popping even as you walk casually through a cocktail party at the house of a nice older woman who supports your work.” “"I’m beginning to suspect that I swallowed a rollercoaster and it is lodged between my heart and my stuff. Am I too big or too small or too much or too little? I have always known that I would die for love. I think I am dying while or because of waiting for it. I cannot bear how it feels like a surging throng of beats and yells and gasps inside of my small form. I have wondered on many occasions if any confidence I have is just a weird side effect of foolishness and I live under the weight of so much embarrassment, I’m surprised the top of my head isn’t flat.”

Why is this exactly what I’m going through right now :’)

I’ve read this book so many times in my life, and each time I find new meaning in it. There are so many layers of Little Weirds, there is always more beauty to unravel from her imagery. It’s sort of like reading a religious text for me, except that feels a tad offensive, but in the sense that I am always able to derive some new inspiring message from each word she writes, and I am able to apply each of Slate’s essays to some problem I am going through at any given moment regardless of what the problems actually are.

“For a while I would have trench-times when everything felt like blank paper and I couldn’t feel anyone’s heart pointed even in my direction, let alone anyone loving me or wanting me to be around. Very boring, very lonely, very tired, again. It was hard to feel anything, except I am not one of the creatures who will experience anything precious. Trench-times were shallow, heavy, and mean.”

Yes, I am in a trench-time right now, Mrs. Slate. I get you. You get me.

But, a hope: mere single digit years after Slate publishes Little Weirds, she will publish Lifeform about the birth of her child and her marriage, and that gives me enough optimism to get me out of the trench-times.

Of course I got sucked into a Wikipedia spiral and learned about Nives Meroi, who at 56 years of age completed the ascent of all eight-thousanders (14 mountains taller than 8,000 mt / 26,247 ft) without supplemental oxygen :O
- I was checking out the community [community profile] longreads and I may have cried a little bit while I was reading this article: I reached out to someone I knew on LiveJournal and had never met in person. Reconnecting made me feel 19 again.

The Colorado River is the most endangered river in the United States—
also, it is a part of my body.

I carry a river. It is who I am: 'Aha Makav. This is not metaphor.

When a Mojave says, Inyech 'Aha Makavch ithuum, we are saying our name.
We are telling a story of our existence. The river runs through the middle
of my body.

So far, I have said the word river in every stanza. I don't want to waste water.
I must preserve the river in my body.

In future stanzas, I will try to be more conservative.

The Spanish called us, Mojave. Colorado, the name they gave our river be-
cause it was silt-red-thick.

Natives have been called red forever. I have never met a red Native, not
even on my reservation, not even at the National Museum of the American
Indian, not even at the largest powwow in Parker, Arizona.

I live in the desert along a dammed blue river. The only red people I've seen
are white tourists sunburned after staying out on the water too long.

Never Enough Time

May. 3rd, 2025 03:54 pm

What a weird week it's been. Work has been A Lot, nonstop. I somehow ended up with a mild case of food poisoning last night. Quickly resolved, fortunately, with no lingering effects today, but deeply unpleasant nonetheless. I'm just glad it didn't affect anyone else in the house.

At least I've been able to get out in the yard some. Everything is planted now, or at least everything I've got so far. There's a plant sale tomorrow where I'm hoping to pick up a few more things, though I've got nothing in particular in mind. We'll just see what's on offer and go from there. This morning we spent some time out back trying to wrangle the brambles that have taken over, and at some point before tomorrow I'll have to go thin out the yarrow and maybe bring some of the healthier extra plants along to the sale to give away.

I'd really like to have the energy and time to get back to ASL studies. We took one class a couple of months ago that had unfortunately terrible methodology - all disconnected vocab, no actual sentence building in the whole two months of it - and have been using online resources since.
But we've not had the same level of focus for it over the past few weeks due to various and sundry events. I feel bad, since being able to sign would be such a useful skill, and I really miss language learning. It's easier in immersion settings in-person, and we haven't found that yet for ASL, though I know it's out there.

Oh, well. We can only do what we can do!
