I probably would have enjoyed the party better if I hadn't been all stressed out about letters from social security demanding I give them over $2000 before the 27th. I called my dad and sent him some information and he said he'd take care of it. I thought this was already taken care of until yesterday. I wish I didn't have fucking autism and could just hold down a damn job.

Rolling right into another Thursday, which means it's time for Recs!

Do you have a rec for this week? Just reply to this post with something queer or queer-adjacent (such as, soap made by a queer person that isn't necessarily queer themed) that you'd, well, recommend. Self-recs are welcome, as are recs for fandom-related content!

Or have you tried something that's been recced here? Do you have your own report to share about it? I'd love to hear about it!

Today is the last day of Three Weeks for Dreamwidth. It's time to wrap up your projects from this event.

You can revisit my opening post above to see what other folks did during this event. Today is a good time to revisit new friends or communities and think about adding them if you have not already done so. Check for finished lists from folks who set a goal of posting every day, or making three anchor posts, to catch anything cool that you might have missed in the scurry. Revisit recent friending memes (some are linked in that post) and Add Me communities to read late entries.

These questions were suggested by [livejournal.com profile] jacklemon.

1. You're holding a dinner party and can invite three famous people from the past or present; who would they be?

2. You have the opportunity to question someone about something you've always wanted to know and receive a truthful answer; what would your question be?

3. If you could change one thing in your life, what would it be?

4. If you could save other people's lives by completing an act that would lead to your own death, would you do it?

5. Would you commit murder if you knew that you could get away with it?

Copy and paste to your own journal, then reply to this post with a link to your answers. If your journal is private or friends-only, you can post your full answers in the comments below.

If you'd like to suggest questions for a future Friday Five, then do so on DreamWidth or LiveJournal. Old sets that were used have been deleted, so we encourage you to suggest some more!

May Challenge: Period Drama

May. 14th, 2025 09:36 pm
grundyscribbling: galadriel smiling (Default)
[personal profile] grundyscribbling posting in [community profile] silwritersguild

A rustle of silk, the song of a sword unsheathed, the rhythmic clop of hooves on cobblestones … Period dramas take us back in time—to the good times, that is, and an escape to a past where we aren't asked to endure the absence of antibiotics, electric lights, or basic rights for most of the population; when people and clothing were beautiful (and had all of their teeth), no one stunk, and toileting practices are left to the imagination.

This month's challenge is a Matryoshka challenge, where you will choose a prompt set based on a level of difficulty, revealing one prompt at a time as you move through your fanwork. Prompts are based around common tropes found in period dramas. It is important to note, however, that your fanwork does not need to be a period piece itself. Any genre, topic, and approach to the prompts is welcome!

How a Matryoshka Challenge Works

Matryoshka dolls are also known as Russian nesting dolls, with each doll containing a smaller doll inside. A Matryoshka challenge works similarly, requiring creators to fit their response to each prompt within a fanwork already underway for previous prompts.

You will use multiple prompts for a Matryoshka challenge. First, choose your difficulty level: Beginner (two prompts), Easy (three), Medium (five), or Difficult (seven … and good luck!) You will include each prompt in your story, opening them one at a time as you create your fanwork. (See below for how to use the prompts for formats other than fanfiction.) Prompts will include directions about when you can open the next prompt. Prompt sets can be found below.

If you want to create a fanwork other than fiction for a Matryoshka challenge, you can use any of the following approaches to your prompt set:

  • You can, of course, use the Matryoshka rules for fiction. For example, if you are making a fan vid, you could open each prompt one at a time to guide the storyline and selection of video clips.
  • You can use each prompt individually to create a series of flash fanworks using either the prompt title or the full prompt (or a mixture of both). For example, if you request a Medium prompt set and want to make fan art, you could do a series of five sketches that fit each of the five prompts.
  • You can open all of the prompts at once and make a fanwork that incorporates them all in some way, using either the prompt title or the full prompt (or a mixture of both).

This month there is a special stamp available for nonwritten fanworks made using the Matryoshka prompts! This would include artwork, audio, link collections, playlists, videos, and multimedia fanworks. Writing is allowed but should also include one of these other types.

Thank you to Zdenka for this month's banner and stamps!

In order to receive a stamp for your fanwork, your response must be posted to the archive on or before 15 June 2025. For complete challenge guidelines, see the Challenges page on our website.

It turned out to be a different skeptics group, I didn't know anybody there but they seemed like interesting people and I enjoyed their company. :)
I hung out in Japantown earlier today, it was a really pretty day out, I had some yummy yakitori and sushi for lunch. I looked at pretty kimonos and interesting art books, I felt like going to a movie but there wasn't anything playing that looked like anything I'd want to see.
Went swimming when I got home.

I'm going to be privating most old personal posts soon, as most of them involve things I no longer want to think about.

Also: I sometimes feel like the content of this journal is perceived as deeply adolescent with how often I talk about my relationship / loneliness issues and developmental disability on access lock and that really I need to focus more on fandom and hobby stuff rather than ranting personally. This is not out of negative self esteem or an intent to get reassured; what I mean is that I do not like how bitter and rumination-focused I can sometimes be, and I want to change that.

I do need a place to talk personal life so it will either go on my Neocities journal page or a new Dreamwidth entirely. I'm not leaving this one, just separating. I need to think about it for a while. I'm really trying to change my life up and having this page has brought me some very hurtful social encounters.

Edit: I'm also going through severe Cymbalta widthdrawal so it could just be that. LOL

What are you currently reading?

The coolest thing ever!! *flails and squees*

I've seen K.J. Charles' books recced everywhere. I've had them recced to me, specifically. They've been in my reading list for, I don't even know, maybe a decade at this point? Yes, I have a problem, please don't focus on that.

I'm glad I finally got off my butt and started reading "The Magpie Lord", part one of "A Charm of Magpies" series. Or, well, listening. I think that Cornell Collins' performance in the audiobook is a really big part of how quickly I got hooked into the story. Slight spoilers and thoughts under the cut ↓

It's basically just chapter 1 and 2 )

It's so, so good! I was listening to this at night in my bed, the rain falling on the balcony and darkness around me (my black cat wrapped around my legs :P) and from one moment to the next I found myself in the book, with these characters.

Cornell Collins doing different voices for everyone definitely helped with the full immersion (I love readers who do that!!), it was always clear who was saying what.

I'm only at chapter 7 now, but I am completely smitten. Can't wait to see what happens next!!

Also, I'm surprisingly keeping up with the Aurora Australis readalong! It helps that the chapters are short and each one of them has been quite engaging. Today we're talking about A Pony Watch, by George Marston. These men have a way with descriptions!
What have you recently finished reading?

Two very different books.

"You & Me" by Tal Bauer is almost 400 pages of hurt comfort. I didn't think I would be interested in single dads romance, especially when teenagers are involved, but I really enjoyed how the protagonist's misery transformed into confidence and joy as the story went on.

Of course, some of my favourite tropes are at play because not only does the protagonist think he's straight, he's also utterly oblivious to the fact that he's falling in love with the other main character. It's cute and endearing and it breaks up the depression of living with a teenager who apparently hates you pretty well.

"Cut & Run" by Madeleine Urban and Abigail Roux is part 1 of the Cut & Run series. I'm not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, the tension is good, both between the characters and in the criminal storyline. Some possibly spoilery rambling under the read more ↓

A cut for Cut & Run )

What will you be reading next?

I wanna listen to every audiobook Mr. Collins recorded!! Okay, maybe not, but he did read a lot of books that are in my TBR pile.

I definitely want to keep going with the Magpie series. There are only 3 audiobooks which are all around 6 hours long, I look forward to listening to them C:

Had some Celebration tea. I want to order more teas because I'm out of that one and Coconut Pu-erh but I have to have them sent to L.'s house because EVERYTHING that gets mail or online ordered and sent to my apt bldg mysteriously disappears and I haven't been able to get ahold of L. for over a week now.
One of the skeptic groups I belong to is actually having the first IRL meeting since covid and they decided to have it at a pub that's inaccessible from where I live by public transit. Thanks, guys! (eyeroll) there was a link to some carpool thing that I had to leave my e mail and physical address and cell phone number at but that meeting is tonight so who the fuck knows if I'm even going to get an answer back. I also have to go to PT later today and won't be able to answer the phone while that's going on.
It did clear up yesterday and I did go swimming.

I was in a good mood yesterday, the wine bar was fun. Then this morning I was going out to the pool to swim my laps when I saw a man in the hall who didn't look familiar to me. He said he hurt his ankle and asked me for a razor blade. I told him I didn't have one and he should go to the ER across the street (this apt bldg happens to be across the street from a hospital), then I went down to the pool and swam my laps, then when I went back up to my apt and got off the elevator the guy was HAVING SEX WITH A GROCERY CART!!! I had to walk right by him to get into my apt and he didn't even stop or try to put his damn pants back on or anything!
